The kind of ‘mobile mini-palaces’ offered by Chhatra Sagar Camp today were the only luxury to be found on faraway Rajput war campaigns centuries earlier. The camp lies on the old estate of Thakur Chhatra Singh of Nimaj, a powerful late 19th century noble; by the early 20th century, Chhatra Sagar had developed into a lush green oasis. Sporting parties, high tea and exotic dinners were a regular feature for Nimaj’s visiting dignitaries – a tradition that continues today for guests, thanks to the efforts of Thakur Chhatra Singh’s descendants. The camp’s 11 spacious tents overlook the lake to the east, where permanent construction has been minimised, retaining the location’s natural, ‘big-sky’ appeal.
