The course here only has nine tees and just six greens, but is located on a private island, and was designed by short-game supremo Jose Maria Olazabal. PGA-qualified instructors are on hand for personalised lessons which target iron play, chipping and putting, while the relaxed feel – some people even choose to practice barefoot – is designed to make players of all levels feel comfortable. Velaa – which also boasts a private submarine, ‘snow room’, three-storey wine cellar housing £1m of plonk and an impressive kids’ club – is the brainchild of Czech billionaire Jiri Smejc, who acquired the island, invested $220m in the place, and then lured his favourite staff from other Maldivian establishments.
